Kettering’s Alfred East Art Gallery Summer Exhibition

Kettering Borough Council’s Alfred East Art Gallery is set to host a new exhibition entitled ‘of Land and Sea’ by artist and illustrator Chris Prout this summer. The Welsh born artist regularly exhibits throughout the region and has artwork in collections throughout the UK and overseas. However, this will be Chris’s first solo show at Kettering’s principal award-winning gallery, in his adoptive home town.

The opportunity to create the exhibition, which runs during July and August, was offered to Chris after a clean sweep at last year’s Open 10 Exhibition and competition, run by the Gallery. Not only did he take the first place for the cash awards, sponsored by QualitySolicitors Wilson Browne, but he also won the public vote for his expansive impressions of the Welsh coastline.

‘Of Land and Sea’ is an expression of the artist’s twin existence; of life in Northamptonshire and his native connection with South-West Wales. Chris describes the work as ‘impressionistic’ and ‘expressive’ and his love of the Welsh hills and coastline is certainly apparent as he captures the dramatic landscapes with bold strokes, colour and gusto. In contrast, his depiction of home life in Northamptonshire is striking too, as optimistic landscapes, village scenes and townscapes appear.

Exhibition Launch Event

All are welcome to come along to the special launch and artist reception, where Chris will be present, to talk to and ask questions.  Saturday 9 July, 2 – 4pm.

Cllr Steve Bellamy  said “I can’t wait to see this exhibition of work – a unique chance to see all of Chris’s work together in a fantastic art space.”

Head of Community Services, Valerie Hitchman said, “I am sure this is going to be another really popular exhibition from such a great local artist. So do come along to the Alfred East Gallery to see images of Northamptonshire and Wales.”

Notes to the Editor

The summer show concludes a highly successful year for Chris who was presented with the prestigious Rose Bowl Award in December by the borough’s Civic Society. This for his illustrations of Kettering’s town centre regeneration scheme and the contribution this has made to the local environment.

“It’s been a good year for the creative juices” said Chris, when asked of his achievements. “I just do what I do and if it resonates with people and helps make a difference, well, that’s a real thrill and bonus...I’m just doing my job!”

‘Of Land and Sea’ runs at The Alfred East Gallery, Sheep Street, Kettering from 9 July until 27 August 2011 and is open to the public Tuesday – Saturday between 10.30am – 4:45pm.
