Kettering Borough Council is urging people to make sure their sporting and community stars get the recognition they deserve by putting forward their nominations for the Kettering Community & Sports Awards 2011. With just one week until the closing date for nominations, midnight Sunday 28th August, there is still time to put forward an individual or team for one of the 16 awards.
A new community section has been added to the awards for the first time this year allowing more members of the local community to gain recognition for their hard work over the past year. If you know an individual, team, club or group who make a contribution to their community that we should all hear about don’t forget to nominate!
The Council has joined forces with the Youth Council, Evening Telegraph and BBC Radio Northamptonshire to host this year’s event. Categories include leader of the year, volunteer of the year, community school of the year, local sportsperson of the year and the special Arthur Nicholson Award for the Sports Personality of the Year Award decided by a public vote from 8th September to 22nd September.
Winners of the community awards will be automatically entered into the Pride of Northants awards in October while those who win the sports awards are put forward to the County Sports Awards with the opportunity of going on to the National Sports Personality Awards.
The Kettering Sports Awards are designed to raise the profile of sport in the borough, showcase sporting talent and to recognise the contributions made by people in the borough. The awards are only open to amateurs, and anyone in the borough is eligible to nominate an individual or team. To nominate visit www.kettering.gov.uk/awards2011 and fill out an online application form.
Valerie Hitchman Head of Community Services at Kettering Borough Council said:
"It's not just sportsmen and women we want to hear from, through the community section of this years awards we are hoping to highlight the work of even more people across the Borough be it individual, volunteers, clubs or groups that help out."
Councillor Steve Bellamy, Portfolio holder for Community & Culture said:
"With the Olympics taking place next year, it's even more important to celebrate the area's many sporting successes along with those who contribute to their local communities. There are many people out there who deserve this kind of recognition in both areas and we want to make sure that happens, so don’t forget to nominate for who has made a difference in your life.”
